Lawmakers Join Global Dialogue at 68th Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference in Barbados

A delegation from the Arunachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly took part in the 68th Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference (CPC), held in Barbados under the central theme “The Commonwealth: A Global Partner.” The prestigious gathering brought together lawmakers, presiding officers, and parliamentary officials from across the Commonwealth to discuss shared challenges and strengthen democratic institutions.

The Indian delegation to the conference was led by Lok Sabha Speaker Shri Om Birla. Representing Arunachal Pradesh, the team was headed by Assembly Speaker Shri Tesam Pongte and included Deputy Speaker Shri Kardo Nyigyor, MLAs Shri Mutchu Mithi and Smti Chakat Aboh. The delegation was supported by Assembly Secretary Smti Tadar Meena and Under Secretary Smti Kheto Lowang, who provided procedural and administrative assistance throughout the event.

The Opening Ceremony featured prominent dignitaries such as H.E. D.S. Mason, President of Barbados; Prime Minister Ms. M.S. Motley; and CPA Secretary General Shri Stephen Twigg. Their presence underscored the importance of parliamentary cooperation in addressing global and regional issues.

The conference agenda encompassed a wide range of sessions, including the CPA General Assembly, Executive Committee meetings, thematic workshops, and the General Debate. Special focus was given to the 41st CPA Small Branches Conference and the 9th Commonwealth Women Parliamentarians (CWP) Conference, both aimed at enhancing inclusive governance and promoting equitable representation.

The Arunachal delegation’s participation highlighted India’s commitment to global parliamentary dialogue and provided a platform to share regional perspectives on democratic development, legislative innovation, and inclusive policymaking.
