Dengue Surge in Manipur: Over 2,300 Cases Reported, One Death Confirmed

Manipur –   Manipur is witnessing a troubling spike in dengue infections this year, with 2,332 confirmed cases and one fatality reported as of October 11, according to data released by the state health department.

The surge marks a dramatic rise from the previous year, which saw 1,353 cases during the same period. Health officials say the increase of nearly 1,000 cases is cause for concern, especially as testing efforts have ramped up — with 5,613 samples screened statewide since January.

Imphal West district has emerged as the epicenter of the outbreak, accounting for more than 70% of the total cases with 1,679 infections. Imphal East followed with 363 cases. Bishnupur and Thoubal districts reported 68 and 63 cases respectively, with Bishnupur also recording the state’s only dengue-related death this year.

In the hill districts, Senapati reported the highest number of cases at 45, followed by Ukhrul with 23. Churachandpur and Kangpokpi districts saw minimal impact, with three and two cases respectively.

Health experts attribute the rise in cases to extended monsoon conditions and the proliferation of stagnant water sources, which provide ideal breeding grounds for the Aedes mosquito — the primary vector for dengue.

In response, the state government has intensified its vector control operations and launched public awareness campaigns aimed at prevention. Officials are urging residents to keep their surroundings clean, eliminate standing water, and use mosquito nets and repellents to reduce the risk of infection.

The health department continues to monitor the situation closely and has called for community cooperation to contain the spread of the disease.
