Assam – The Assam Legislative Assembly began its Budget Session today, marking the last sitting of the current government before the state heads into Assembly elections expected in March–April.
The four-day session commenced with the Governor’s customary address, setting the stage for legislative business. With polls around the corner, the government will not present a full budget. Instead, Finance Minister Ajanta Neog is slated to introduce a Vote on Account on February 17, enabling the administration to cover essential expenditure for the initial months of the new financial year until a new government takes office and tables a complete budget.
This session carries political significance as it is the final opportunity for the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its allies to showcase their legislative record before voters. The BJP currently holds 64 seats in the 126-member House, while its partners — Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL), and Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) — account for nine, seven, and three seats respectively.
During the proceedings, members will take up ordinances, committee reports, motions for elections to boards and committees, and government bills. Supplementary Demands for Grants and Appropriation for 2025–26 are also scheduled. On February 17, the House will hold Question Hour, followed by Neog’s presentation of the Vote on Account for 2026–27, alongside discussions on the Motion of Thanks to the Governor’s address.
With elections imminent, sharp exchanges between treasury and opposition benches are anticipated, as both sides are expected to leverage the Assembly floor to sharpen their political messaging ahead of the campaign.
