Guwahati Writer Taken Into Custody Over Posts Targeting Zubeen Garg

Assam :  The Assam Police Crime Branch on Monday detained writer Sikha Sarma following allegations that she made defamatory remarks about late singer and cultural icon Zubeen Garg on social media.

The action came shortly after Garima Saikia Garg, wife of the celebrated artist, lodged a formal complaint accusing Sarma of publishing objectionable posts that tarnished the singer’s reputation. Based on the complaint, police registered Case No. 2/26 under several provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including sections relating to defamation, criminal intimidation, promoting enmity, and making false statements.

Officials said Sarma was picked up from her residence in Guwahati’s Patharquarry locality and taken in for questioning as part of the ongoing investigation. “The case was registered after examining the complaint and preliminary material linked to the posts. She has been detained to facilitate further inquiry,” a senior officer confirmed.

The development has sparked strong reactions among fans of Zubeen Garg. Members of the All Assam Zubeen Garg Fans’ Forum gathered at Dispur Police Station to support the FIR and demanded strict action against what they described as repeated offensive remarks directed at the late singer.

Sarma has faced mounting criticism in recent days for her social media activity, which many admirers of Garg considered disrespectful. The controversy has triggered widespread outrage across Assam, where the singer is revered as one of the state’s most influential cultural figures.
