Assam – Assam has achieved a major employment milestone, with Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announcing that the state has provided more than 1.5 lakh government jobs since 2021. The announcement, made on Saturday, marks the fulfilment and surpassing of a key election promise to create one lakh jobs during the current government’s tenure.
At a programme held at Sarusajai Stadium, Sarma handed over appointment letters to over 6,000 candidates selected for Grade III posts through the Assam Direct Recruitment Examination (ADRE). The distribution came a day after 4,369 Grade IV recruits received their letters, taking the total number of appointments to 1,50,033
Speaking at the Jyoti-Bishnu International Cultural Centre, the Chief Minister highlighted the challenges of ensuring transparency in recruitment. He noted that earlier, separate departmental examinations often led to duplication, corruption allegations, and lengthy court battles, which in turn caused staff shortages across government offices. To address these issues, the state introduced a unified recruitment system backed by new legislation and separate commissions for Grade III and Grade IV posts.
The ADRE examinations were conducted simultaneously across 28 districts, with more than 9.12 lakh candidates appearing. Internet services were suspended during the test to prevent malpractice, and Sarma pointed out that the credibility of the process was evident in the absence of court cases challenging the recruitment
Urging the newly appointed employees to serve with dedication, Sarma stressed the importance of timely and efficient service delivery to citizens. He also announced that the ‘Swagata Satirtha’ portal, which facilitates mutual transfers among government staff, will reopen on February 1.
The Chief Minister said merit-based recruitment has restored confidence among Assam’s youth and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to transparent governance. Alongside public sector jobs, he added, the state is also encouraging entrepreneurship as a parallel avenue for employment generation
