Meghalaya CM Applauds Discovery of New Snake Species in Garo Hills

Meghalaya – Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma has hailed the discovery of a new snake species, Calamaria garoensis, in the Garo Hills, describing it as a testament to the state’s rich biodiversity.

In a message shared on his official handle on April 20, Sangma congratulated the team of researchers whose collaborative study led to the identification of the species. The research involved scientists from Help Earth, Cotton University, Assam Don Bosco University, Mizoram University, the Zoological Survey of India, and Indonesia’s National Research and Innovation Agency.

The Chief Minister said the finding highlights the ecological importance of Meghalaya’s forests and draws international attention to the state’s extraordinary natural wealth. He emphasized that the discovery reflects the unique biodiversity of the Garo Hills and strengthens the case for conservation.

“Heartiest congratulations to the team of researchers on the discovery of Calamaria garoensis in the Garo Hills. This remarkable finding underscores the immense value of our forests and the rich biodiversity of our state,” Sangma noted in his message.

Officials added that the discovery further reinforces the ecological significance of the Garo Hills, a region long recognized for its diverse flora and fauna and its appeal to the global scientific community.
