Assam’s New Landmark: CM Himanta Biswa Sarma Dedicates Swaraj Udyan in Jorhat to Freedom Fighters

Jorhat, Assam – Jorhat gained a new cultural and recreational landmark on Wednesday as Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma inaugurated Swaraj Udyan, a public park designed to honour the region’s freedom fighters while offering citizens a green space for leisure.

The park, located near the Jorhat Central Jail, spans 175 bighas and has been developed at a cost of Rs 159 crore. Conceived as a tribute to the freedom fighters from the eight Northeastern states, Swaraj Udyan features granite memorial pillars that commemorate their contributions to India’s independence movement.

Speaking at the inauguration, Sarma said the project reflects the government’s commitment to preserving history and celebrating the sacrifices of the region’s heroes. He added that the park is intended not only as a recreational hub but also as a place of remembrance and inspiration for future generations.

Officials noted that Swaraj Udyan is expected to become a major landmark in Jorhat, combining heritage preservation with environmental awareness. With its blend of memorial structures and open green spaces, the park is envisioned as both a tribute to the past and a vibrant destination for the present.
