Assam CM Vows Eviction Drive on Encroached Land Post-Elections

Assam – Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has pledged to launch large‑scale eviction operations across the state after the Assembly elections, targeting nearly five lakh bighas of land—equivalent to over 1.65 lakh acres—that officials say are under illegal occupation.

The announcement came on March 1 during the BJP’s Jan Ashirwad Yatra, where Sarma received a symbolic “bulldozer salute” from party workers in Jagiroad. Ten bulldozers lined the route, showering flower petals as the Chief Minister passed, a gesture meant to highlight the government’s uncompromising stance on land encroachment.

Joined by Assam BJP president Dilip Saikia, Sarma continued the yatra through Morigaon, Raha, and Nagaon before concluding at Barhampur. Addressing supporters, he reiterated that reclaiming government property and enforcing land laws would remain a priority if the BJP secures another term.

The proposed eviction drive is positioned as part of the administration’s broader effort to strengthen law and order while ensuring that state resources are protected from unlawful occupation—a theme that has become a prominent political issue in Assam.
