Manipur CM Unveils Bridge, School Facilities; Launches Road Upgrade

Manipur – Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh on March 1 inaugurated a series of development projects in Imphal East district, underscoring the government’s focus on infrastructure and education.

At Moirangpurel, the Chief Minister opened the Itham Moirangpurel Bridge, constructed under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY), and dedicated new facilities at Moirangpurel Higher Secondary School, including a Science and Arts Block built under Samagra Shiksha. He also inaugurated a Model Residential School funded through the Pradhan Mantri Jan Vikas Karyakram (PMJVK).

Later, Singh flagged off the upgradation of a key road stretch from NH‑202 at Lamlai to Thoubal Dam via Napet Palli. The 18.5‑km project, overseen by the Public Works Department, is expected to be completed within a year and will strengthen connectivity between NH‑202 (Imphal–Ukhrul Road) and NH‑102(A) (Shangshak–Tengnoupal Road).

Speaking at Moirangpurel Higher Secondary School, the Chief Minister acknowledged staffing shortages at the institution and assured corrective measures. He also directed police to investigate reports of unlawful activities along the Moirangpurel road allegedly involving security personnel. In addition, Singh instructed the Deputy Commissioner of Imphal East to resolve pending benefit transfers for internally displaced persons from Laikhong village.

The Higher Secondary School project, built at a cost of ₹3.78 crore, includes classrooms, laboratories, a library, gender‑segregated toilets, and a rainwater harvesting system. The Model Residential School, funded by the Ministry of Minority Affairs, cost about ₹25.62 crore. The Itham Moirangpurel Bridge over the Thoubal River was constructed at a sanctioned cost of ₹645.84 lakh by M/s NDS Construction under PMGSY‑1.

Local legislators welcomed the initiatives. Andro MLA Th. Shyamkumar praised the Chief Minister’s leadership, while Lamlai MLA Khongbantabam Ibomcha said development momentum has accelerated under the current government. Phungyar MLA Leishiyo Keishing suggested upgrading the Napet Palli–Ashang Khullen road to National Highway status to further boost regional growth.

The programme was attended by senior officials, including Commissioner to the Chief Minister N. Ashok Kumar and PWD Chief Engineer Chongtham Biswachandra Singh, alongside education department representatives, students, and residents.
