Portugal’s all-time leading scorer announces international retirement, ending a distinguished national team journey that delivered a European Championship title and numerous records.
Cristiano Ronaldo has announced his retirement from international football, drawing the curtain on a remarkable career with Portugal that spanned more than two decades and reshaped the country’s footballing history.
The veteran forward revealed his decision through a message on social media, stating that the time had come to relinquish the iconic No. 7 jersey and make way for the next generation of Portuguese players.
Ronaldo said representing Portugal had been one of the greatest honours of his life. Reflecting on his long association with the national team, he described the shirt as a symbol that belonged to the country and its people rather than to any individual player. He acknowledged that the decision to step aside had been emotionally challenging but felt it was the right moment to do so.
Having made his senior international debut in August 2003, Ronaldo leaves the national side as Portugal’s most prolific goalscorer. He scored 146 goals in 234 appearances and represented the country at six FIFA World Cups, achievements that underline one of the most enduring international careers in modern football.
His crowning moment in Portuguese colours came in 2016 when he captained the team to victory at the UEFA European Championship, securing the nation’s first major international trophy. The triumph remains one of the defining chapters of his career and a landmark achievement in Portugal’s sporting history.
Ronaldo’s final appearances for the national team came amid reports of differences with head coach Jorge Jesus. After featuring in Portugal’s Nations League win over Wales in September, he was not selected to start the following match and subsequently departed the team’s training camp. While the coach later indicated that the door remained open for his return, Ronaldo has now formally brought his international journey to an end.
The Portuguese Football Federation paid tribute to the striker, expressing gratitude for his contribution to the national team and recognising his influence on generations of young footballers. The federation also announced plans to organise a special tribute event in honour of his achievements and service to Portuguese football.
Although his chapter with Portugal has concluded, Ronaldo is expected to continue his club career with Saudi Pro League side Al-Nassr. The 41-year-old remains focused on reaching the milestone of 1,000 career goals and is approaching the landmark as he enters what is expected to be the final phase of his playing career
