The Assam government has proposed forming a joint authority with the Centre to implement five ropeway projects aimed at improving connectivity to key tourist attractions, religious sites and urban transport hubs across the state.
Guwahati, Assam: The Assam government has put forward a proposal to establish a dedicated Ropeway Development Authority in collaboration with the Central government for the construction and management of five ropeway projects across the state.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the proposed mechanism would operate as a joint venture, with the Centre holding a 51 per cent stake and the Assam government owning the remaining 49 per cent. The authority is expected to oversee planning and execution of ropeway corridors at several strategically important locations.
Among the projects under consideration is a ropeway link between Kamakhya Railway Station and the Maa Kamakhya temple in Guwahati, aimed at easing access to one of the region’s most visited pilgrimage centres. Another proposed corridor would connect Khanapara with Guwahati Railway Station, offering an alternative transport option within the city.
In southern Assam, a ropeway has been proposed between Ganganagar and Bhuban Pahar in the Barak Valley region. Two additional projects are planned in hill and tourism destinations, including a connection between Hempeupet Peak and the Jatinga Bird Watching Point in Dima Hasao district, and another linking Agnigarh with Bhairab Mandir in Sonitpur district.
The state government believes the proposed ropeway network will enhance accessibility to prominent cultural, religious and tourism destinations while also contributing to improved transport infrastructure.
The proposal was discussed and approved during a meeting of the Assam Cabinet held on November 3. Once constituted, the proposed authority will be responsible for steering the projects under the envisioned Centre-state partnership framework.
