KSU appeals to the East Khasi Hills administration for strict enforcement of firecracker regulations during Diwali to curb noise pollution and protect residents.
Shillong, Meghalaya: The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU), Mawprem Circle, has urged the East Khasi Hills district administration to strengthen enforcement of firecracker regulations during Diwali, warning that uncontrolled use of fireworks could disturb residents and pose risks to public health.
The union submitted a representation to Deputy Commissioner Abhilash Baranwal on Wednesday, seeking closer monitoring of firecracker use, particularly in residential areas such as Mawprem. The appeal was made by KSU Mawprem Circle president Badonkupar Nongbri and vice-president Pynshngaiñ Lyngdoh Lyngkhoi.
While recognising the religious and cultural significance of Diwali, the union maintained that festivities should be conducted responsibly, without causing unnecessary hardship to others. It expressed concern over the effects of excessive noise on children, senior citizens, patients and individuals who are particularly sensitive to loud sounds.
The KSU called for compliance with Supreme Court directives governing the use of firecrackers, which, according to the union, permit bursting only between 8 pm and 10 pm during Diwali.
It also urged authorities to prevent the use and circulation of fireworks that exceed prescribed noise limits. The union cited permissible limits of 125 dB(AI) or 145 dB(C) peak when measured at a distance of four metres, and sought action against products that fail to meet the stipulated standards.
The representation further called for the police and other relevant departments to be directed to enforce the regulations effectively, take action against violators and curb the sale and distribution of prohibited firecrackers.
Emphasising the need for greater public awareness, the union urged the administration to organise campaigns highlighting the harmful effects of air and noise pollution associated with fireworks.
The KSU also appealed to residents to cooperate with the authorities and celebrate Diwali in a manner that upholds public peace, environmental responsibility and consideration for the well-being of the community.
