Assam’s Hatisar Designated Temporary Immigration Point for Bhutan’s Project 108 Event

The special immigration facility will facilitate the movement of Bhutanese citizens and foreign participants travelling to Gelephu in Bhutan for a major international Buddhist gathering.

Assam –  The Centre has authorised a temporary immigration checkpoint at Hatisar in Assam to facilitate cross-border travel for an upcoming international event in neighbouring Bhutan.

According to an official notification issued by the Union Ministry of Home Affairs, the temporary facility will enable the entry and exit of Bhutanese nationals as well as third-country visitors attending Project 108, a large-scale religious and cultural event scheduled to be held in Bhutan’s Gelephu Mindfulness City (GMC).

The event will take place in Gelephu, located in Bhutan’s Sarpang district along the Indo-Bhutan border, and is expected to attract participants from across the country and abroad.

A key feature of Project 108 is the simultaneous construction and consecration of 108 Jangchub Chortens, or Buddhist stupas, in a single day. The initiative is expected to draw monks, spiritual leaders, practitioners and devotees from different parts of the world.

Officials said the temporary immigration post at Hatisar has been established to ensure smoother movement of visitors travelling to the event, reducing logistical challenges associated with cross-border access during the gathering.

The arrangement is expected to facilitate travel for a large number of attendees while strengthening connectivity between Assam and Bhutan during the international programme. The move also reflects growing cooperation in supporting cultural and religious events that attract participants from across borders.
