Assam to Establish Skill India International Centre to Boost Global Employment Prospects

Assam is set to host a Skill India International Centre aimed at preparing young people for overseas employment through globally recognised training and certification programmes, as stakeholders push to strengthen the Northeast’s skill ecosystem.

Guwahati,Assam: Assam has taken a significant step towards expanding international employment opportunities for its youth with plans to set up a Skill India International Centre in the state. The initiative is expected to provide specialised training aligned with global industry standards and help aspiring job seekers access opportunities in foreign markets.

The proposal was formalised through an exchange of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the Union Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship and the Assam government during the Northeast Tourism & Hospitality Skill Conclave 2026 held in Guwahati.

According to officials, the upcoming centre will focus on equipping candidates with skills that match international industry requirements. The facility is expected to provide globally recognised certifications, industry-oriented training and support mechanisms designed to connect trained candidates with overseas employers.

The move is part of broader efforts to strengthen workforce readiness in the Northeast and enable young professionals to compete in international labour markets, particularly in sectors witnessing growing demand for skilled personnel, including tourism and hospitality.

The conclave served as a platform for government officials, industry representatives and training organisations to examine ways of preparing the workforce for opportunities beyond India. Discussions centred on ensuring that skill development courses remain relevant to the requirements of employers in international markets.

During the event, a new cluster was announced under the Pradhan Mantri Skilling and Employability Transformation through Upgraded ITIs (PM-SETU) programme. The initiative will bring together the Union Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, the Assam government, the National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC), Numaligarh Refinery Limited and Oil India Limited in a collaborative effort to strengthen vocational training and employability.

The collaboration is expected to encourage greater participation from industry while fostering coordination among public institutions and corporate partners to improve skill development outcomes.

Addressing the gathering, Assam Skill, Employment and Entrepreneurship Minister Biswajit Daimary said young people must be equipped with skills that match current industry needs so that they can benefit from opportunities emerging in overseas job markets. He also pointed to the Northeast’s potential as a tourism and hospitality destination and stressed the need for closer engagement between government departments, educational institutions and industry stakeholders.

Union Minister of State for Skill Development and Entrepreneurship Jayant Chaudhary said strengthening the region’s training infrastructure was essential for expanding access to international employment avenues for the younger generation.

As part of the conclave, a workshop on international mobility in the tourism and hospitality sector brought together key stakeholders to examine overseas industry expectations, recognised skill standards and available training avenues. The deliberations also focused on the qualifications and certifications required for candidates seeking jobs in foreign countries.

Officials said the proposed Skill India International Centre would help connect local skill development initiatives with global workforce demand, enabling aspiring workers from Assam and other Northeastern states to explore employment prospects abroad.

The announcements made during the conclave reflect a continued emphasis on industry-led training, stronger institutional partnerships and the creation of broader employment opportunities for the region’s youth.
