Assam CM honours Lovlina with ₹50 Lakh Cash Award for Asian Games Triumph

Guwahati, Assam: Asian Games champion Lovlina Borgohain received a cash reward of ₹50 lakh from the Assam government on Tuesday in recognition of her gold medal-winning feat on the continental stage.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma handed over the cheque to the boxer during a felicitation programme at Lok Sewa Bhawan, praising her for bringing laurels to both Assam and the country through her remarkable achievement.

The honour came a day after the star boxer returned home to a jubilant reception in Guwahati. Supporters, well-wishers, political leaders and sports enthusiasts gathered in large numbers at Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport to welcome the athlete, who has once again placed Assam on the international sporting map.

Borgohain sealed the biggest title of her career in the women’s 75kg division after outclassing China’s Bao Ziyi in the final. The victory, achieved on her birthday, added another milestone to an already distinguished career that includes an Olympic bronze medal and multiple international podium finishes.

The latest success also marks a significant improvement from her previous Asian Games campaign, where she finished with a silver medal. By standing atop the podium this time, the Assam boxer joined an elite list of Indian women boxers to have won gold at the Asian Games.

Welcoming her at the airport earlier, Sports and Youth Welfare Minister Biswajit Daimary and other dignitaries congratulated the boxer for her accomplishment. Leaders from various political parties also extended greetings, reflecting the widespread admiration her achievement has generated across the state.

Addressing reporters after her arrival, Borgohain expressed gratitude to the people of Assam for their continued encouragement throughout her journey. She said the overwhelming affection shown by supporters upon her return made the achievement even more special.

With the Asian Games gold now added to her collection, Borgohain is expected to shift her attention towards upcoming international competitions as she continues her pursuit of further success on the world stage.
