Itanagar, Arunachal Pradesh: Arunachal Pradesh has earned national recognition for its implementation of the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Urban (PMAY-U), securing two awards at the World Habitat Day 2026 celebrations held in New Delhi.
The state was honoured for achieving complete and timely completion of houses sanctioned under PMAY-U and for emerging as one of the top-performing states under PMAY-U 2.0. The awards were presented during a function organised by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs at Vigyan Bhawan.
Officials said the accolades reflect the state’s success in ensuring that approved housing projects are completed within prescribed timelines and that eligible beneficiaries receive support without unnecessary delays.
The recognition highlights the coordinated efforts of the Urban Affairs Department, Directorate of Urban Local Bodies, district authorities and various agencies involved in implementing the Centre’s flagship urban housing programme across the state.
The achievement is particularly notable given Arunachal Pradesh’s difficult geographical conditions, including remote habitations, hilly terrain and logistical challenges that often complicate the execution of development projects.
According to officials, continuous monitoring, effective coordination and a focus on timely delivery have played a key role in the successful implementation of the housing schemes.
The awards were received on behalf of the state by Director of Urban Local Bodies Hano Takka and other officials associated with the PMAY-U programme.
PMAY-U is a flagship central government initiative aimed at providing permanent housing to eligible urban beneficiaries. Under PMAY-U 2.0, the government has set a target of extending housing assistance to one crore urban poor and middle-income families over a five-year period.
The latest recognition is expected to further strengthen the state’s efforts to improve urban housing infrastructure and ensure wider access to affordable housing for eligible citizens.
