Assam : Lok Sabha MP Amarsing Tisso has sharply criticised the district administration and Assam Police for failing to ensure the presence of senior officials during the flagging-off of the Dibrugarh–Gomtinagar–Dibrugarh Amrit Bharat Express at Diphu Railway Station.
The event, virtually inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi as part of a nationwide initiative, drew a large crowd of passengers and local residents. However, Tisso expressed serious concern over what he described as a glaring lapse in crowd management and security arrangements at a programme of national importance.
Speaking to reporters after the ceremony, the Diphu MP said not a single magistrate or senior police officer was present to oversee the gathering. He noted that only a small contingent of Government Railway Police (GRP) and Railway Protection Force personnel were deployed, despite thousands of people assembling on and around platform number two, close to active railway tracks.
“This was not just a matter of protocol but of public safety,” Tisso remarked. “Leaving a huge crowd near operational tracks without adequate supervision was extremely risky and avoidable.”
He further stressed that events linked to national projects, particularly those aimed at boosting connectivity in the Northeast, must be treated with the highest seriousness by the administration. The absence of senior officials, he alleged, reflected poor planning and inadequate preparedness for an event of such scale.
Highlighting the significance of the new Amrit Bharat Express service, which includes Diphu as a stoppage, Tisso said the train is being projected as a transformative step in linking Assam with Uttar Pradesh. Administrative indifference at such landmark occasions, he warned, undermines public confidence and raises questions about governance and law-and-order readiness.
The incident has sparked debate locally, with residents and observers questioning whether safety and coordination are being given sufficient priority during high-profile public programmes in Karbi Anglong.
