Ex-Agniveers to Get 12% Quota in Select Assam Government Posts

Former Agniveers domiciled in Assam will receive horizontal reservation in select government posts from 2027, with the state citing their military training, discipline and service as valuable assets for public administration.

Guwahati,Assam :  In a move aimed at creating employment opportunities for former military personnel recruited under the Agnipath scheme, the Assam government has approved a 12 per cent horizontal reservation for eligible Ex-Agniveers in a range of state government jobs.

The decision, cleared by the state Cabinet earlier this month, was announced by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who said the policy reflects the government’s commitment to acknowledging the contribution of Agniveers after the completion of their service in the Armed Forces.

As per an official notification issued by the Home Department, the reservation will be applicable in direct recruitment to specified posts across several departments. The state government has also decided to conduct dedicated recruitment exercises every year beginning in 2027 to facilitate the induction of eligible candidates.

The quota will be available only to former Agniveers from Assam who have completed their stint under the Centre’s Agnipath recruitment programme and possess documentary proof of their service. Eligibility will extend to those who served the full engagement period in any of the three defence services and have been formally discharged with the requisite certification.

Under the new policy, reserved opportunities will be created in a range of frontline and uniformed services, including the state police force, forest protection units, fire and rescue services, disaster response agencies, correctional institutions, home guards and the excise wing.

Officials said the decision seeks to channel the expertise, physical training and leadership qualities gained during military service into the state’s administrative and security apparatus. The government believes the experience of former Agniveers can enhance efficiency and professionalism across public institutions.

While the notification formally establishes the reservation framework, detailed operational provisions, including the categories of posts covered, mode of recruitment and eligibility conditions, are expected to be issued by the respective recruiting authorities in due course.
