Agartala, — The Tripura Pradesh Congress Committee has raised serious concerns about the integrity of the electoral process in the state, accusing the BJP-led central government and the Election Commission of India (ECI) of undermining democratic norms. At a press briefing on Monday, state Congress spokesperson Prabir Chakraborty alleged that elections are being compromised through manipulation of voter rolls and misuse of administrative machinery.
Chakraborty claimed that recent elections have seen “systematic interference,” including the removal of legitimate voters and the inclusion of questionable entries in the electoral rolls. He asserted that such practices have turned the democratic exercise into a “mere formality,” and called for heightened public awareness and institutional accountability.
“In the interest of preserving democratic values and ensuring transparency in the upcoming Assembly elections, we urge strict scrutiny of the voter registration process,” Chakraborty said. He emphasized the need for safeguards to prevent disenfranchisement and to block any unauthorized additions to the rolls.
The Congress party has launched a state-level campaign to educate citizens about these alleged irregularities and to mobilize support for electoral reforms. Chakraborty appealed to all democratic and secular forces in Tripura to encourage voter registration and to remain vigilant against any form of vote tampering.
These remarks come amid a broader national debate over electoral transparency, with opposition leaders—including Rahul Gandhi—accusing the ECI of bias and demanding reforms. The Election Commission, however, has dismissed such allegations as unfounded and reiterated its commitment to fair and impartial conduct
