Shillong – In a landmark move toward sustainable urban transport, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma launched the city’s first Public Bicycle Sharing (PBS) system on Monday, joined by fitness icon Milind Soman. The initiative marks a significant step in implementing the Shillong Urban Mobility Policy 2024, which envisions 35% of city transport to be non-motorised.
The launch event, held at Police Bazar, featured a symbolic ride by the Chief Minister, who emphasized the importance of active mobility in building a healthier and greener Meghalaya. “The PBS system reflects our commitment to sustainable urban mobility and a fitter future for our citizens,” Sangma said.
The first phase of the project introduces over 20 electric bicycles, available to residents through an app-based platform. The system encourages walking and cycling as primary modes of transport, aiming to reduce dependence on fossil fuel-driven vehicles and ease traffic congestion in the hill city.
The initiative is led by the Urban Affairs Department in collaboration with GIZ India, under the Sustainable Urban Mobility – Air Quality, Climate Action & Accessibility (SUM-ACA) project. It also has the backing of the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA).
Milind Soman, who participated in the launch, praised the effort as a cultural shift toward environmental responsibility and healthier living. “Cycling is not just a mode of transport—it’s a lifestyle choice that benefits both the individual and the planet,” he said.
The PBS system is part of a broader strategy to transform Shillong into a walking and cycling-friendly city. Officials hope the initiative will inspire other urban centres in the Northeast to adopt similar models for clean and inclusive mobility
