Assam – A 40-year-old male rhinoceros was discovered dead inside Assam’s Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary on February 18, with forest officials confirming that the animal died of natural causes. The horn was recovered intact and placed in safe custody, ruling out any immediate suspicion of poaching.
Forest Range Officer Pranjal Baruah said the carcass was spotted during routine patrol duty near the Jugdol Camp area. A team led by the Range Officer later retrieved the body from the bank of Chitalmari beel. Veterinary experts from the Assam State Zoo and Botanical Garden conducted a post-mortem, which confirmed natural death. Samples were collected for further analysis before the carcass was disposed of.
Officials emphasized that the intact horn indicated no foul play, underscoring the effectiveness of anti-poaching measures in the sanctuary.
