PM Modi Calls Northeast India “Ashtalakshmi,” Accuses Congress of Neglect

Guwahati –  Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during a public rally in Assam’s capital, underscored the strategic and cultural importance of the Northeast, describing the region as “Ashtalakshmi,” a symbol of prosperity and growth. He contrasted this vision with what he termed decades of neglect under Congress rule.

Speaking on his first visit to the Northeast after the Union Budget presentation, Modi said the region now occupies a central place in the government’s development agenda. “The Northeast, once overlooked, is today our priority. For us, it is Ashtalakshmi, and we are committed to making it economically self-reliant,” he told the gathering.

The Prime Minister accused Congress of failing to integrate the Northeast into the national mainstream, adding that those who do not respect “Mother India” cannot truly serve the nation.

Highlighting recent infrastructure projects, Modi pointed to the transformation of connectivity in Assam. “There was a time when the Northeast was synonymous with poor roads and isolation. Today, highways are being built where even aircraft can land. This is the new spirit of Assam,” he said, framing the changes as a matter of pride for the region.

Modi also reflected on his identity within the BJP, crediting the party’s rise to the dedication of grassroots workers. “The greatest honour of my life is being a BJP worker. Whatever success the party has achieved belongs to our karyakartas,” he said, invoking Maa Adi Shakti and Maa Kamakhya while paying respects to party cadres in Assam.

On the anniversary of the 2019 Pulwama terror attack, the Prime Minister paid homage to the security personnel who lost their lives. He reminded the audience of India’s firm response to terrorism in the aftermath, stressing the country’s resolve to safeguard its sovereignty.
