Mizoram – Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma on Thursday formally inaugurated the state’s first independent National Cadet Corps (NCC) Group Headquarters, a move that separates the state’s youth organisation activities from Assam and gives Mizoram its own command structure.
The inauguration ceremony, held at the Chief Minister’s office, was attended by Sports and Youth Services Minister Lalnghinglova Hmar, Major General Anurag Vij, Additional Director General of NCC North Eastern Region, and Brigadier G.S. Arora, Commander of the Aizawl Group Headquarters. Following the brief ceremony, ministers and senior NCC officers met to discuss future plans for the organisation in the state.
Speaking at the event, Lalduhoma said the decision to establish a separate headquarters was driven by the need to strengthen character-building among young people. He expressed concern over the growing influence of substance abuse and stressed that structured platforms like the NCC were vital in steering youth towards discipline and responsibility. “Our young people must be given opportunities to develop and demonstrate their skills in a disciplined environment,” he said, adding that the new headquarters would expand such avenues.
Major General Vij, in his address, reiterated the NCC’s mission of training cadets to become socially conscious citizens while promoting healthy lifestyles free from substance abuse. He noted that while youth from the Northeast are widely regarded as disciplined and capable, they are sometimes perceived as less connected with other parts of the country. To bridge this gap, he said, the NCC would increase inter-state exposure and interaction to strengthen national integration.
On infrastructure, NCC officials highlighted the need for suitable accommodation to sustain long-term operations. They indicated that if the state government provides land, the organisation is prepared to construct its own facilities, even on a long-term lease basis.
Mizoram currently has four NCC units with around 8,000 cadets. Officials expect the new headquarters to significantly expand activities and outreach across the state, giving more young people access to training and opportunities under the NCC framework.
