Meghalaya Puts Organic Farming on Global Map at BIOFACH 2026

Meghalaya has entered the international spotlight with its first-ever participation at BIOFACH 2026, the premier global exhibition for organic food and agriculture. The state used the platform to demonstrate its progress in building a sustainable farming model that is ready to compete in world markets.

This year’s fair drew representatives from more than 90 countries, with India honoured as Country of the Year. Against this backdrop, Meghalaya presented its comprehensive organic framework — from certification and farmer cooperatives to branding strategies and export-focused value chains — positioning itself as a rising player in the global organic sector.

A senior official leading the delegation outlined Meghalaya’s roadmap for organic development, stressing its community-driven model anchored in institutional strength, ecological sustainability, and market integration. The presentation emphasized how farmer groups, supported by enabling policies and certification frameworks, are steadily aligning with international standards on traceability and sustainability.

Farmer representatives from the state were also part of the delegation, bringing grassroots perspectives to the global stage. Extensive discussions were held with international buyers, certification agencies, organic traders, and development institutions to explore procurement partnerships and long-term collaborations.

According to the Department of Agriculture & Farmers’ Welfare, Meghalaya’s participation at BIOFACH marks a deliberate step toward integrating its organic producers into global value chains. The state’s presence underscored its readiness to compete in international markets while reinforcing its commitment to sustainable agriculture.
