Meghalaya – The Meghalaya government has formally handed over land for the construction of a Holiday Inn Resort in Tura, marking the sixth five-star hospitality project currently underway in the state. The move signals a deliberate push to extend premium tourism infrastructure beyond Shillong and into the Garo Hills.
The upcoming property, to be managed by InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG), will redevelop the state-owned Polo Orchid site under a public-private partnership. With an investment of ₹130 crore from the private partner, the resort will be the first five-star hotel in Tura and the wider Garo Hills region.
Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma described the project as part of a broader economic strategy rather than an isolated hospitality venture. “Hotels are part of a larger infrastructure. Development means building an ecosystem and investing across sectors,” he said. Sangma noted that Meghalaya’s economy, valued at under $4 billion when his government took office, is now close to $7 billion. He reiterated the long-term target of transforming the state into a $150 billion economy by 2047, positioning the Tura project as part of that growth trajectory.
Tourism Minister Timothy Shira welcomed the land handover, calling tourism “a key economic driver” for Meghalaya. He highlighted Garo Hills’ potential as an eco-tourism destination and pointed to initiatives such as the Chief Minister’s Meghalaya Homestay Mission, which offers a 70 percent subsidy to local entrepreneurs.
Officials said the resort is expected to generate both direct and indirect employment while strengthening tourism infrastructure in a region often described as underexplored despite its ecological and cultural richness.
IHG representatives confirmed the company’s commitment to expanding its footprint in the Northeast and contributing to Meghalaya’s economic development.
The Tura project is being closely watched as a test case for whether high-end hospitality can anchor broader economic activity in the Garo Hills, reducing the concentration of premium tourism in Shillong and diversifying the state’s visitor economy.
