Meghalaya – Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on March 5 formally handed over appointment letters to close to 3,000 newly inducted personnel of the Meghalaya Police, calling the recruitment drive a landmark step in strengthening law enforcement and governance in the state.
Speaking at a ceremony in Tura, Sangma described the occasion as historic, noting that it was among the largest police recruitments ever undertaken in Meghalaya. He emphasized that the process was conducted transparently and on merit, adding that the government considered the exercise a matter of pride.
The Chief Minister highlighted the overwhelming response to the recruitment, with more than 1.7 lakh applicants vying for positions. Of these, 2,968 candidates were selected to fill vacancies across technical and service-oriented roles. The appointments include 1,494 Armed Branch Constables, 720 Unarmed Branch Constables, 205 Multipurpose Response Operators, and 195 firemen, along with UBSI, driver, operator, and mechanic posts.
Sangma underscored the importance of the police force in maintaining peace and stability, which he said were essential for development. “Without law and order, progress cannot move forward,” he remarked, urging recruits to uphold discipline, fairness, and integrity in their duties.
He also pointed out that during nearly eight years of his administration, close to 11,000 appointments have been made across different sectors, reflecting the government’s commitment to strengthening institutions.
The event began with a ceremonial salute and felicitation of dignitaries. Director General of Police Idashisha Nongrang welcomed the recruits and guests before the formal distribution of appointment letters in the presence of senior officials.
