Meghalaya Assembly Speaker Bars MLAs From Posting Selfie Videos

Meghalaya – Members of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly have been directed not to record or share selfie-style videos from inside the House, after Speaker Thomas A. Sangma ruled the practice violates parliamentary decorum.

The announcement came on February 18, a day after Voice of the People’s Party leader Ardent Basaiawmoit posted a clip of himself during the ongoing Budget Session. The video was later removed.

Explaining his decision, the Speaker told legislators that filming oneself while participating in proceedings and circulating such content on social media breaches established parliamentary norms. He cited Rule 275 of the Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business, which governs the conduct of members inside the Assembly.

A member taking video of himself while speaking inside the House and circulating it on social media — is prohibited. This is my ruling,” Sangma declared.

The directive is intended to preserve the sanctity of legislative proceedings and ensure that debates and discussions within the Assembly are conducted with seriousness and respect.
