Majuli Gets ₹2,218-Crore Boost; CM Sarma Empowers 31,952 Women Entrepreneurs

Assam – Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday unveiled a sweeping development package for Majuli, inaugurating and laying the foundation stone for projects worth ₹2,218 crore in the river island district. Alongside infrastructure initiatives, he distributed seed capital cheques of ₹10,000 each to 31,952 women entrepreneurs, underscoring the government’s focus on grassroots empowerment.

Addressing a public gathering, Sarma said Majuli had never witnessed development on such a scale, adding that the projects would reshape the district’s administrative, educational, and cultural landscape.

Among the major initiatives, the Chief Minister inaugurated the academic building and girls’ hostel of Majuli Cultural University, constructed at a cost of ₹51 crore. The three-storey academic block can accommodate 1,880 students and houses offices for the Vice Chancellor and Registrar, while the four-storey hostel provides space for 178 students.

Other projects included the ₹24.83-crore Integrated District Commissioner’s Office at Garamur, a ₹3.57-crore District Transport Officer’s Office between Garmur and Kamalabari, and a ₹33.17-crore Government Model Degree College spread across 30 bighas. The college features three academic blocks, a girls’ hostel, faculty quarters, residences for staff, and official quarters for the Principal and Warden.

Cultural infrastructure also received attention, with the inauguration of the ₹3.64-crore Dakhinpat Satra Museum, equipped with audio-visual rooms, exhibition halls, and study spaces. At Garamur, a new three-storey office for the Senior Superintendent of Police and the Jyoti Bishnu Cultural Complex auditorium were completed at costs of ₹4.20 crore and ₹1.25 crore, respectively.

Connectivity projects included the upgrade of the road from Balichapori in Majuli to Bongaonmara in Lakhimpur and the construction of two bridges over the Lohit and Subansiri rivers. The 702.30-metre Lohit bridge at Selekghat was inaugurated during the visit, while Sarma also launched the reconstruction of the Majuli–Jorhat bridge project, which had been stalled since September 2024.

In his outreach to women entrepreneurs, Sarma said the seed capital distribution was only the beginning of a larger programme aimed at helping beneficiaries achieve “Lakhpati” status. He stressed that women-led economic empowerment would remain a central pillar of the state’s development agenda.

The initiatives mark one of the largest single-day development pushes in Majuli, combining infrastructure upgrades with social and economic support to drive long-term growth in Assam’s iconic river island district.
