Manipur – The Foothills Football Championship, held from February 9 to 12 at New Keithelmanbi, concluded with spirited participation from 13 teams representing Manipur’s diverse communities. Organised by the Assam Rifles under Operation Sadbhavana, the four‑day event was designed to foster interaction among young people from the Meitei, Kuki, and Naga groups at a time when the state continues to face ethnic tensions.
The tournament followed a knockout format with 13 matches, culminating in a final between New Keithelmanbi Part II Team B (Meitei) and Haibung FC (Kuki). New Keithelmanbi Part II Team B clinched the title with a 5–2 victory. The champions received a trophy, medals, certificates, and a cash prize of ₹20,000, while the runners‑up were awarded ₹10,000 along with trophies and certificates. Both teams were also provided with playing kits.
Individual honours were presented at the closing ceremony. Athoiba Yumnam of New Keithelmanbi Part II Team B was named Best Player of the Tournament after scoring five goals, while teammate A. Shyamananda was recognised as Best Goalkeeper for his crucial saves. Teams that did not reach the final were given participation certificates and cash prizes.
The matches drew large crowds of local residents, with cultural performances staged alongside the games to showcase the region’s traditions. Organisers said the championship was intended to provide a platform for dialogue and engagement among communities whose relations have been strained in recent years.
By bringing together Meitei, Kuki, and Naga players on the same field, the Foothills Football Championship highlighted the role of sport as a unifying force in Manipur’s ongoing search for peace and reconciliation.
