Mumbai – Actor Sonu Sood has stepped forward to support fellow actor-comedian Rajpal Yadav, who was sent to Tihar Jail after the Delhi High Court rejected his plea for more time to clear dues in a long-standing financial dispute.
Yadav, facing multiple cheque-bounce cases, is required to pay nearly ₹9 crore. The court directed him to make payments of ₹1.35 crore in each of the seven cases filed against him, along with releasing amounts already deposited with the registrar general in favour of the complainant.
Responding to the development, Sood announced on social media that Yadav would be part of his upcoming film and pledged a signing amount to help him during the crisis. He urged filmmakers and colleagues to extend similar support, stressing that such gestures are about “dignity, not charity.”
“Rajpal Yadav is a gifted actor who has given years of unforgettable work to our industry. Sometimes life turns unfair, not because of talent, but because timing can be brutal. This is the moment for all of us — producers, directors, colleagues — to stand together,” Sood wrote in his post.
Yadav, a graduate of the National School of Drama, is widely recognised for his roles in films such as Mujhse Shaadi Karogi, Phir Hera Pheri, Hungama, Partner, and Bhool Bhulaiyaa. His financial troubles trace back to a ₹5 crore loan taken in 2010 from M/s Murali Projects Pvt Ltd to fund his directorial debut Ata Pata Laapata, which failed commercially.
Ahead of his surrender, Yadav told Bollywood Hungama that he had no means to repay the outstanding amount and lamented the lack of support from industry colleagues, remarking that “everyone is on their own” in the film business.
Sood’s intervention has drawn widespread praise from fans and social media users, many of whom lauded his gesture and called for greater solidarity within the film fraternity.
