Cross-Border Bus Service Between Tripura and Bangladesh Restarts After Two-Year Halt

Agartala, Tripura – Passenger bus services linking Tripura with Bangladesh resumed this week after nearly two years of suspension, marking a renewed chapter in cross-border connectivity.

The first bus, carrying nine passengers from Kolkata via Dhaka, crossed into India through the Akhaura Check Post in Agartala. Tripura Transport Minister Sushanta Chowdhury welcomed the travellers, describing the occasion as a symbol of friendship and cooperation between the two nations.

Chowdhury noted that the service had been discontinued due to political unrest in Bangladesh but was now operational again following the installation of a new government there. He expressed optimism that the revival would strengthen bilateral ties and open fresh opportunities for trade, cultural exchange, and people-to-people contact.

The minister also highlighted the historical and cultural bonds between Tripura and Bangladesh, stressing that developments across the border have a direct impact on the state. He conveyed congratulations to the new Bangladeshi leadership and said Prime Minister Narendra Modi had extended greetings to Prime Minister Tarique Rahman. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, he added, remains in close coordination with Dhaka to ensure smooth cooperation.

Officials in Tripura believe the restoration of bus and visa services will give fresh momentum to India–Bangladesh relations, reinforcing the longstanding partnership between the two neighbours.
