The Union government has sanctioned the construction of 5,000 houses in Manipur for families uprooted by ethnic violence, under the Pradhan Mantri Awaas Yojana–Gramin (PMAY–G).
The approval came after a meeting in the capital between Union Agriculture and Rural Development Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan and a delegation from Manipur led by Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh, along with Deputy Chief Ministers Nemcha Kipgen and Losii Dikho.
Officials said the housing initiative is designed to provide permanent shelter with basic amenities to internally displaced persons (IDPs) who have been living in relief camps and temporary shelters since last year’s unrest. The Centre described the move as part of its broader effort to stabilise the state and ensure dignified rehabilitation.
Earlier this month, the Manipur government had submitted a proposal seeking special assistance under PMAY–G for 5,000 houses. The Rural Development Ministry has now approved the request, along with a dedicated household survey through Awass+ 2024 to identify eligible beneficiaries. State authorities have been directed to complete registration and verification using the mobile application linked to the scheme.
The ministry has also allowed the state to sanction houses for families who had previously received assistance under PMAY–G but lost their homes during the violence. Construction will follow the technical and financial guidelines of the scheme, with strict adherence to beneficiary identification norms.
During the meeting, Chief Minister Singh briefed Chouhan on the scale of displacement and the urgent need for permanent housing. Chouhan assured continued central support for rebuilding communities and strengthening rural infrastructure. The houses are expected to be built in a time-bound manner once verification is complete.
