BJP Alliance Eyes 103 Seats in Assam, Says CM Sarma

Assam –  Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has claimed that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its allies are well positioned to win up to 103 of the state’s 126 Assembly constituencies in the upcoming elections, expected in March–April.

Speaking at a programme in Dimoria, Kamrup Metropolitan district, Sarma said the alliance’s prospects had strengthened following the delimitation exercise carried out in 2023. He noted that the redrawing of constituency boundaries had boosted the BJP’s chances from around 90 seats earlier to 103 now, attributing the gain of 13–15 seats directly to the process.

The Chief Minister, however, cautioned against making firm predictions at this stage, pointing out that alliance structures and seat-sharing arrangements were yet to be finalised by both the ruling coalition and the opposition. He added that while the BJP-led bloc was confident in 103 constituencies, there were about 22 seats where the party would contest symbolically without expecting victory. “Ultimately, the decision rests with the people—whether we win nearly all seats or closer to 80 or 90 per cent,” he remarked.

Sarma also took a swipe at Assam Congress president Gaurav Gogoi, saying the opposition leader seemed overly focused on him. Referring to Gogoi’s privileged background, he quipped that he found it amusing to be given such importance by the Congress leader.

On recent projections suggesting a third consecutive term for the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in Assam, Sarma reiterated that it was too early for such forecasts. He stressed that neither the NDA nor the opposition United Progressive Alliance (UPA) had finalised their alliances or seat-sharing plans, and said the political picture would become clearer by February.

Meanwhile, a tracker poll conducted by People’s Pulse Research Organisation has estimated that the BJP could secure between 69 and 74 seats, while the Congress may win 25 to 29.

Currently, the BJP holds 64 seats in the Assembly. Its allies—the Asom Gana Parishad, United People’s Party Liberal, and Bodoland People’s Front—have nine, seven, and three seats respectively. On the opposition side, the Congress has 26 MLAs, the All India United Democratic Front 15, the CPI(M) one, and Raijor Dal one Independent legislator.
