Assam’s Karbi Anglong Ginger Makes Historic Entry into London Market

Assam – In a breakthrough for Assam’s agricultural exports, the state’s famed Karbi Anglong ginger—recognized with a Geographical Indication (GI) tag—has been shipped to London for the first time.

The inaugural consignment was formally flagged off on March 1 by Agriculture Minister Atul Bora at Krishi Bhawan in Guwahati. Senior officials of the agriculture department and representatives of farmer groups were present at the ceremony, underscoring the importance of the occasion.

The GI certification, which authenticates the origin and unique qualities of Karbi Anglong ginger, is expected to give growers access to premium international markets. Officials noted that the export initiative will not only enhance recognition of Assam’s indigenous produce but also provide farmers with better income opportunities through traceability and higher pricing.

State authorities emphasized that the shipment aligns with Assam’s broader strategy to position its traditional crops on the global stage. By integrating local producers into international supply chains, the government hopes to strengthen the state’s reputation in the spice trade and encourage similar ventures for other GI-tagged products.

Industry stakeholders believe the successful London dispatch could pave the way for sustained exports, opening new doors for Karbi Anglong’s farming community and reinforcing Assam’s role in the global marketplace for specialty agricultural goods.
