Assam to Sign MoU with British Museum for Return of Vrindavani Vastra

Assam – Assam is on the brink of a historic cultural milestone, with Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announcing that the state will soon sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the British Museum to bring back the revered Vrindavani Vastra under a loan arrangement.

The Chief Minister described the 16th-century textile, woven by Mahapurush Srimanta Sankardev, as a “timeless masterpiece” that reflects the essence of Assam’s Vaishnavite tradition through its intricate artistry and spiritual depth. “Our government has initiated the process to ensure this priceless treasure returns to Assam, where it truly belongs,” Sarma said.

Taking to social media, Sarma wrote: “Tomorrow is a big day for Assam and Bharat. We are signing an MoU with the British Museum so that the sacred Vrindavani Vastra can be brought back home under a loaning arrangement. Vikas and Virasat continue to be pillars of our governance agenda.”

During his ongoing visit to the United Kingdom, the Chief Minister shared that he spent his first day exploring London’s waterfront, noting that Assam is working to redevelop the Guwahati riverfront by adopting global best practices. He also met members of the Indian diaspora, commending their contributions abroad.

The move represents a major step in Assam’s long-standing efforts to reclaim the Vrindavani Vastra, a textile masterpiece created by the saint-reformer Srimanta Sankardev. Sarma had earlier highlighted progress in this mission in August, reiterating the government’s commitment to safeguarding and celebrating Assam’s cultural heritage.
