Assam readies for record-breaking Bagurumba performance

Assam – Guwahati is preparing to witness one of its grandest cultural showcases as nearly 10,000 performers gear up to present the traditional Bodo dance, Bagurumba, at Sarusajai Stadium on January 17. The mass performance, designed to enter the world record books, has set the state abuzz with rehearsals and anticipation.

A three-day statewide practice session is currently underway to ensure seamless coordination among the thousands of dancers. Participants from across Assam have been training intensively, with large gatherings seen at venues such as Gandhi Maidan in Boko. From the Boko–Chhaygaon and Palashbari Assembly constituencies alone, 545 artistes are expected to join the spectacle.

Known as the “butterfly dance” for its graceful, flowing movements, Bagurumba is a centuries-old tradition of the Bodo community. The upcoming event is being hailed as a milestone in Assam’s cultural calendar, celebrating discipline, unity, and collective pride while highlighting the richness of Bodo heritage on an unprecedented scale.

Adding to the occasion’s significance, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to attend the programme, giving the event national prominence. Organisers say the performance will not only showcase Assam’s cultural vitality but also strengthen the identity of the Bodo people through their iconic dance form.
