Assam Hikes Orthodox Tea Subsidy to ₹15/kg, Targets Export Growth

Assam – The Assam government has announced a significant increase in subsidies for orthodox tea, raising support from ₹10 to ₹15 per kilogram. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the move is designed to strengthen Assam’s position in international markets and take advantage of tariff concessions under India’s recent trade agreements with the United Kingdom, the European Union, and an upcoming pact with the United States.

Speaking to reporters, Sarma highlighted that Assam’s tea industry is showing signs of revival after years of stagnation. “Exports are climbing again, and orthodox tea production, which had slowed earlier, is witnessing a strong recovery. This year’s indicators are very promising,” he noted.

The decision followed consultations with leading tea associations in the state. Industry representatives believe the enhanced subsidy will allow producers to better leverage tariff reductions under the new trade frameworks, making Assam’s premium orthodox tea more competitive abroad.

Orthodox tea, prized for its traditional processing methods and high demand in overseas markets, had faced challenges in recent years due to global competition and shifting consumer preferences. The state government’s renewed emphasis on export-oriented production, coupled with central trade deals, is expected to reverse that decline.

Sarma pointed out that a series of policy measures introduced over the past year have already contributed to record production levels and stronger export performance. With fresh tariff advantages opening up in Western markets, he expressed optimism that Assam could be entering a “golden era” for its tea industry.

Tea industry stakeholders have welcomed the subsidy hike, calling it a timely intervention that will enhance competitiveness and reinforce Assam’s standing in premium global markets.
