Assam – Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on February 26 announced a set of welfare measures approved by the state Cabinet, including the distribution of scooters to Accredited Social Health Activists (ASHA) and their supervisors. The initiative is aimed at improving mobility for grassroots health workers and strengthening healthcare delivery in remote areas.
According to the Cabinet decision, 33,656 ASHA workers and 2,570 supervisors will receive scooters funded directly by the state government. The move builds on earlier schemes that provided scooters to meritorious girl students and is expected to ease the challenges faced by health workers in reaching households across rural Assam.
The Cabinet also cleared financial assistance under the Orunodoi scheme, with Rs 9,000 to be disbursed to 39.7 lakh beneficiaries. The distribution, amounting to a total expenditure of Rs 3,600 crore, will take place on March 10 at 11 a.m. through meetings organized at panchayat and ward levels statewide.
Sarma said the measures reflect the government’s continuing effort to expand social welfare coverage and reinforce service delivery at the grassroots. He emphasized that both the scooter distribution and the Orunodoi payments are designed to directly support citizens and improve access to essential services.
