Guwahati : In a significant move aimed at ensuring transparency and accountability, the Assam government has constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the sudden death of celebrated singer Zubeen Garg. The decision, announced by Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday, follows mounting public concern and widespread calls for a thorough inquiry.
The SIT, formed under the Chief Minister’s directive, will be led by Special Director General of Police (CID) M. P. Gupta. Rosie Kalita, Senior Superintendent of Police, CM Vigilance, has been appointed as the Chief Investigating Officer. The team comprises a cadre of experienced officers, including Additional Superintendents of Police, Deputy Superintendents, Inspectors, and Sub-Inspectors drawn from the CID and various district units.
The investigation will focus on CID Police Station Case No. 18/2025, registered under sections 61(2), 105, and 106(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023. Officials have been instructed to maintain strict adherence to procedural timelines and uphold the highest standards of integrity throughout the inquiry.
Speaking to the media after a high-level meeting with senior law enforcement and administrative officials, Chief Minister Sarma emphasized the government’s resolve to uncover the truth. “We are committed to a fair and impartial investigation. The SIT will operate independently and without interference,” he said. He also confirmed that viscera samples from the late singer would be sent to the Central Forensic Laboratory in Delhi for advanced analysis.
“The people of Assam deserve answers, and we will ensure that justice is served. No one will be shielded,” Sarma added, reflecting the gravity with which the state is approaching the case.
The formation of the SIT has been welcomed by fans and citizens alike, many of whom have been closely following developments since the news of Garg’s demise broke. Assam Police reiterated that all officers assigned to the SIT will remain with the team until the investigation concludes.
