Assam – Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has placed green energy and semiconductor development at the centre of the state’s investment pitch during the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, underscoring Assam’s role as a driver of growth for the entire Northeast.
Speaking on the sidelines of the global summit, Sarma said Assam must be seen as an inseparable part of the region’s collective economic future. “Any investment in Assam benefits the whole Northeast because of our shared geography, talent pool and infrastructure,” he noted.
Citing the proposed Tata semiconductor project, the Chief Minister stressed that while such industries may be physically located in Assam, their economic impact will extend across neighbouring states. He described Guwahati as the “gateway to the Northeast,” pointing out that the city’s plains and land availability make it uniquely suited to host large-scale industries, unlike the hilly terrain of other states.
On the semiconductor sector, Sarma said interest has grown since Tata’s entry, and meetings with industry leaders are planned to build momentum. While no formal proposals have yet been tabled, he expressed confidence that Assam can develop a strong ecosystem for the sector.
Tourism also featured in his Davos agenda. Sarma revealed that investors have shown interest in hotels and homestays, with several MoUs for five-star properties in Guwahati and Kaziranga expected to be signed after his return.
Reflecting on the Advantage Assam 2.0 summit held last year, Sarma said MoUs worth ₹5 lakh crore were signed, of which nearly ₹3 lakh crore have already been grounded. He added that land acquisition and project execution are underway, with investors expanding into new areas such as pumped storage projects to complement solar power initiatives.
The Chief Minister highlighted Assam’s focus on green and new energy, stating that MoUs worth close to ₹1 lakh crore are expected in sectors including pumped storage and innovative ventures like bamboo-to-methanol conversion. He described this as a unique opportunity for the state.
Calling Assam’s debut at Davos a milestone, Sarma said the state is now positioning itself as an emerging economy worthy of global attention
