Assam CM Pays Tribute to Ratan Tata, Recalls His Legacy in Cancer Care and Industrial Growth

Guwahati, Assam : Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday paid tribute to veteran industrialist and philanthropist Ratan Tata on his death anniversary, remembering his lasting contributions to the state’s healthcare sector and industrial development.

In a message shared on social media, Sarma described Tata as a visionary leader whose association with Assam went beyond business. He recalled that Tata consistently showed a keen interest in the state’s progress and often sought ways to contribute to the welfare of its people.

Highlighting Tata’s role in strengthening cancer treatment infrastructure, the Chief Minister said he played a pivotal part in the establishment of the Assam Cancer Care Foundation’s network of hospitals across the state. At a time when thousands of patients struggled with limited access to specialised treatment, Tata worked closely with the state government to expand cancer care services and improve healthcare accessibility.

Sarma noted that healthcare became one of Tata’s key areas of focus in the latter part of his life and that Assam benefited significantly from his commitment to the cause. The network of cancer hospitals established under the initiative has since emerged as a major pillar of healthcare in the state.

The Chief Minister also recalled Tata’s contribution to Assam’s industrial ambitions, particularly in the electronics and technology sectors. Referring to the Tata semiconductor project at Jagiroad, he said the facility represents a major step towards positioning Assam as a technology and manufacturing hub.

According to Sarma, the semiconductor plant is expected to become operational by the end of 2026 and stands as a reflection of Tata’s confidence in Assam’s potential. He added that the township being developed around the project has been named Ratan Tata Electronics City in recognition of his contribution.

Sarma said Tata’s legacy continues to live on through institutions and projects that have strengthened healthcare services and opened new avenues for industrial growth in the Northeast.
