Assam CM Inaugurates Star Cement Plant in Cachar, Boosting Barak Valley’s Industrial Prospects

Cachar, Assam – Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on February 20 inaugurated Star Cement’s new unit at Bihara in Cachar district, calling it a milestone for industrial growth and employment generation in the Barak Valley.

Speaking at the launch, Sarma said the facility reflects “the face of a new Assam where industrialisation is laying the foundation of prosperity and growth.” He emphasised that the project will create fresh opportunities for local youth and strengthen the region’s economy.

According to officials, the greenfield plant has an annual production capacity of 2 million tonnes and is equipped with advanced German technology. It is also the first private cement unit in the Barak Valley to have its own railway siding, a feature expected to improve logistics and ease the transport of raw materials and finished products.

Authorities described the project as one of the largest industrial investments in the valley, likely to stimulate economic activity and support infrastructure development.

During the event, the Chief Minister also highlighted the transformation of Guwahati’s Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport. He noted that the upgraded facility, inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, will open to the public on February 22, positioning it as a world-class gateway for the state.

The inauguration of the cement plant and the airport upgrade together signal Assam’s push to accelerate industrialisation and modernise infrastructure across key regions.
