Jairampur in Arunachal Pradesh’s Changlang district has been declared a ‘Promising Swachh Shehar’ in the national Swachh Survekshan Award, recognizing its outstanding cleanliness and urban development efforts.
The award was presented by Union Minister for Housing and Urban Affairs Manohar Lal during a ceremony in New Delhi, attended by President Droupadi Murmu and other dignitaries. Arunachal Pradesh Urban Affairs Minister Balo Raja and Urban Affairs Commissioner Vivek Pandey received the award on behalf of the state, acknowledging the relentless work of Jairampur’s urban local body, sanitation workers, and residents.
Jairampur’s achievement highlights its commitment to sustainable urban development and improved public health under the Swachh Bharat Mission – Urban (SBM-U). With over 80% forest cover, Jairampur’s win emphasizes the need for equitable urban development in frontier regions. State Urban Affairs Minister Balo Raja urged the Centre to revise funding policies for hilly and north-eastern states, recommending a relaxation in population eligibility criteria to 5000 for small towns and district headquarters.
This award not only recognizes Jairampur’s cleanliness but also showcases its potential as a model for other cities in the region to follow in terms of urban development and sanitation practices.
