Arunachal CM Unveils ‘Rakta’ Organic Red Rice from Tawang

Arunachal Pradesh – Chief Minister Pema Khandu has introduced Rakta rice, an organic red rice variety native to Tawang district, calling it a symbol of traditional wisdom and sustainable agriculture in Arunachal Pradesh.

Announcing the launch on social media, Khandu said the initiative highlights the state’s rich farming heritage and brings indigenous practices to a wider audience. “This is more than just a food product — it represents the preservation of traditional seed varieties and the agricultural legacy of our people,” he noted.

The product is cultivated and marketed by Rakta Organic, an enterprise founded by Pema Tsewang of Grengkhar village in Tawang. Officials said the venture aims to link high‑altitude farming traditions with broader markets, while creating livelihood opportunities and encouraging local entrepreneurship.

Red rice has long been grown in the cold valleys of Tawang by the Monpa community, using age‑old techniques suited to the mountainous terrain. Known for its nutritional value and resilience to harsh weather, the crop has been a staple in the region for generations.

Khandu emphasized that promoting indigenous crops and organic farming is vital for safeguarding Arunachal’s agricultural heritage. Officials added that the launch of Rakta rice is expected to strengthen efforts to preserve traditional seed varieties and expand sustainable farming initiatives across the state.
