Guwahati — Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has announced that strict legal proceedings will be initiated against Assam Civil Service (ACS) officer Nupur Borah, who was recently arrested for allegedly possessing assets vastly disproportionate to her official earnings.
Borah, who was serving as the Circle Officer in Goraimari under Kamrup district, is accused of accumulating wealth nearly 400 times greater than her documented income. During raids conducted at her properties in Guwahati and Barpeta, investigators recovered approximately ₹92.5 lakh in cash and jewellery valued at around ₹1.5 crore.
Speaking at a public event in Baksa district, CM Sarma emphasized that mere administrative action such as suspension or dismissal would not suffice in this case. “She has acquired assets far beyond her legitimate income. We must pursue criminal charges through the judicial system,” he stated.
According to officials, Borah had been under surveillance for six months following her alleged involvement in an unauthorized land transfer while posted in Barpeta. The controversy led to her reassignment from the district.
Rosie Kalita, Senior Superintendent of Police with the Chief Minister’s Special Vigilance Cell, confirmed Borah’s arrest after a preliminary investigation. “We searched her residence in Guwahati and a rented flat in Barpeta, recovering the highest amount of cash ever seized by our unit,” Kalita said.
Authorities have also confiscated three residential flats in Guwahati linked to Borah, along with a substantial quantity of gold and other valuables. Several individuals suspected of being connected to the case are currently being interrogated.
Urging public cooperation, Sarma called on citizens to report any instances of bribery or corruption. “I appeal to everyone to stay alert and inform us if any government official demands illicit payments,” he said.
The Chief Minister assured that the inquiry would be conducted with full transparency, reinforcing the government’s commitment to rooting out corruption and ensuring accountability in public service.
