Created as part of his ‘Soul Canvas’ series, Michael Mili’s artwork blends the athletic spirit of the Tawang Marathon with the region’s cultural and spiritual landscape.
Guwahati, Assam: A distinctive artwork by Assam-based artist Michael Mili has offered a creative interpretation of the recently concluded Tawang Marathon, portraying the event as more than a test of endurance by highlighting its connection with the cultural and spiritual heritage of Arunachal Pradesh.
The monochrome sketch, created during Mili’s visit to Tawang, features a woman runner set against the backdrop of the town’s iconic Buddha statue and mountainous terrain. Through the composition, the artist seeks to reflect the relationship between sport, faith and the natural beauty that characterises the high-altitude region.
The work is part of Mili’s ongoing ‘Soul Canvas’ series, a collection of artworks produced entirely with his fingers rather than conventional tools such as brushes, pens or digital styluses. Known for his unconventional artistic style, Mili began his journey as a cartoonist at a young age and gained recognition as one of the country’s youngest professional cartoonists. His illustrations and cartoons have appeared in a range of regional and national publications over the years.
The artwork coincides with the fourth edition of the Tawang Marathon, held on October 24 at the Gyalwa Tsangyang Gyatso High Altitude Stadium, situated nearly 10,000 feet above sea level. Organised by the Arunachal Pradesh government in collaboration with the Indian Army, the event featured a full marathon, half marathon, 10-km race and a 5-km run.
The marathon attracted more than 4,500 participants, including professional athletes, defence personnel and local residents. Apart from promoting long-distance running, the event showcased Tawang’s growing appeal as a destination for adventure tourism and outdoor sporting activities.
By placing a solitary runner within Tawang’s well-known spiritual setting, Mili’s artwork captures the unique character of the marathon and presents a visual narrative that reflects both the physical challenge of the race and the cultural identity of the region.
