Northeast gets direct access to Thailand as IndiGo launches Bangkok route

The new non-stop service links Guwahati directly with Thailand’s capital, offering faster international travel options for the Northeast and supporting efforts to position the city as a regional aviation gateway.

Guwahati, Assam: Taking a significant step towards enhancing the Northeast’s global aviation footprint, IndiGo on Sunday commenced non-stop flights connecting Guwahati with Bangkok, bringing Thailand’s capital within direct reach of travellers from the region.

The inaugural service was flagged off at Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport, where airport authorities and airline representatives marked the occasion with a ceremonial programme. Passengers on the maiden flight were welcomed as part of the launch event.

The introduction of the route is expected to improve overseas travel options for residents of Assam and neighbouring northeastern states by reducing travel time and eliminating the need for transit through other Indian cities. Bangkok remains one of the most sought-after destinations for tourism, trade and international connectivity.

Welcoming the development, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the direct service reflects Assam’s growing integration with international markets and tourism networks. He noted that stronger air links would help position Guwahati as an important aviation and commercial hub in the eastern part of the country.

Sharing his views on social media, the Chief Minister said the new route aligns with India’s Act East policy, which focuses on deepening engagement with countries across Southeast Asia through greater economic, cultural and people-to-people exchanges.

Industry observers believe the launch will further strengthen Guwahati’s role as a regional aviation centre while opening fresh opportunities for business, tourism and cross-border interactions between Northeast India and Southeast Asia.
