Elon Musk Rejects Manipur Starlink Claims, Says Service Inactive in India

Guwahati, Assam:  SpaceX founder and chief executive Elon Musk has once again dismissed reports suggesting that insurgent groups in Manipur accessed Starlink satellite internet services, asserting that the company’s network is not operational over India.

In a statement posted on social media platform X, Musk said Starlink’s satellite coverage remains inactive across India, making allegations of its use within the country unfounded. His remarks came amid renewed debate over the presence of Starlink-branded equipment recovered during security operations in Manipur.

The controversy traces back to a seizure of satellite communication devices by security agencies during anti-insurgency operations in the state. The discovery had triggered concerns that armed groups might be relying on satellite-based internet connectivity to circumvent communication restrictions imposed during periods of unrest.

Investigators had earlier indicated that the recovered equipment may have entered Manipur through neighbouring Myanmar, where Starlink services are available. Reports circulating at the time also suggested that insurgent elements operating near the international border may have attempted to access satellite internet networks.

Musk had previously rejected similar allegations when questions first emerged following the recovery of Starlink-marked devices in the conflict-affected region. His latest comments reiterate the company’s position that its services are not currently functioning in India.

The issue has regained attention as Starlink continues to await the completion of regulatory processes required to begin commercial operations in the country. While the company has secured key approvals in the satellite communication sector, public services have not yet been rolled out.

The debate has also coincided with Musk’s criticism of delays in the company’s entry into the Indian market. The billionaire entrepreneur recently alleged that powerful interests within the telecommunications sector were hindering Starlink’s expansion, a charge that has been rejected by government authorities.

Security experts have previously flagged concerns over the potential misuse of satellite communication technology in sensitive border regions. However, Musk’s latest clarification maintains that Starlink’s network remains inactive over Indian territory, despite the recovery of equipment bearing the company’s branding in Manipur.
