Cachar, Assam – Cachar district in Assam was shaken on Wednesday after a Class 9 student was discovered dead inside the hostel of a residential school, with police investigating whether ragging may have played a role in the suspected suicide.
The boy, identified as Arindam Das from a village near Silchar, was found hanging in the bathroom of the hostel at Pailapool under Lakhipur police station. Authorities said he had returned to the school on March 8 following the vacation.
Family members have alleged that ragging could have driven the teenager to take the extreme step. His brother, Ajay Das, claimed that harassment by peers may have been a factor, urging investigators to look into the possibility.
School principal Viswas Kumar stated that the institution would carry out its own inquiry alongside the police and civil administration. He stressed that the school has an anti-ragging committee in place and promised strict action if any student is found guilty.
The body has been sent to Silchar Medical College and Hospital for post-mortem examination. Police said further investigation is underway to determine the circumstances surrounding the death.
