Arunachal Pradesh has once again spotlighted the Northeast as India’s mountain biking hub by hosting the 22nd National Mountain Bike (MTB) Cycling Championship in Roing, Lower Dibang Valley.
Organised by the Cycling Federation of India in partnership with the Arunachal Cycling Association, the four‑day event (February 12–15) has attracted 512 riders from 29 states. Competitions are being held on a demanding 3.9‑km technical trail near the Eze River, a course that highlights the state’s rugged Himalayan terrain and growing reputation for adventure sports.
Cycling Federation of India Secretary General Maninder Pal Singh said the championship reflects the success of grassroots talent programmes. “Lesser‑known players are winning medals and new riders are securing podium finishes. The Arunachal Cycling Association deserves credit,” he noted.
Association Secretary and mountaineer Taka Tamut reported that 36 medals were awarded across senior, junior and other categories, with more than eight champions recognised on the opening day. He added that medical assistance was being provided to injured riders and explained that Roing was chosen for its accessibility and ideal topography. Ten elimination races were scheduled in the morning session.
Southern states including Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra and Kerala delivered strong performances on the second day, clinching multiple medals across categories.
With its distinctive landscape and expanding sports infrastructure, Arunachal Pradesh has quickly emerged as a premier destination for mountain biking. The ongoing championship is expected to further strengthen the state’s position as the Northeast’s cycling capital and boost sports tourism in the region.
